The first light of dawn was creeping into the hotel room when Reece stirred awake. She blinked groggily at the daylight streaming through the crack in the heavy drapes, her senses still muddled from a night of fitful sleep.

Across the room, Shanahan was already awake, hunched over his laptop. The cool blue glow of the screen reflected in his intense gaze. His stubbled jaw was taut, hinting at an hour or more spent wrestling with the digital shadows.

Pushing back the plush comforter, Reece padded across the plush carpet, her bare feet sinking into its depths. She came to a halt behind Shanahan, her curiosity piqued by the torrent of text and cryptic usernames flashing across his screen.

Shanahan's voice was gravelly when he finally spoke, his focus never wavering from the screen. "Found something you need to see."

Reece leaned closer, her eyes scanning the cryptic messages on the dark web forum. The screen was awash with codes, symbols, and vague hints, the clandestine language of the underworld. It was a chat room for the Sons of HUHI, threads upon threads filled with information hidden in metaphors and riddles.

One message caught her attention, a cryptic string of words that read, "Today we melt the candle, brothers. Keep the flame ready for the ride on the bullet."

"What's the candle reference?" Reece asked, trying to decipher the hidden message.

"It's a term used by the Sons," Shanahan replied. "It's what I mentioned last night—the high-profile target. They plan to 'melt' it, a metaphor for murder."

"Who?" She whispered.

Shanahan shrugged. "That's what we need to figure out."

Reece read the message again, a single phrase catching her attention. "On the bullet," she mumbled aloud, the words sparking a connection. Realization dawned on her.

"The train," she gasped, her gaze snapping to Shanahan. "The drug train the kid mentioned. They're planning to carry out the murder on the California Bullet…today."
